Stamps.

stamps

For a project called 'subvert the familiar' I want to look at money and how we could subvert the value of it, as at times in economic crisis in history the money is literally not worth the paper it is printed on.

Hyperinflation is inflation that is very high or "out of control", a condition in which prices increase rapidly as a currency loses its value and in countries experiencing hyperinflation, the central bank often prints money in larger and larger denominations as the smaller denomination notes become worthless. This can result in the production of some interesting banknotes, including those denominated in amounts of 1,000,000,000 or more.

The largest denomination banknote ever officially issued for circulation was in 1946 by the Hungarian National Bank for the amount of 100 quintillion pengő

I just thought this was all so interesting especially these stamps that as you can see it wasn't worth reprinting the stamps so they simply reprinted the inflated price on top of the old ones - Brilliant!

Good Friends

I went to London on thursday with Alice and we met up with our amazing Italian friend Niccolo and equally cool friend Nick from Minneapolis, It was a great day of wondering around Covent garden - visiting London Graphic centre and Magma bookstore and also grabbing a drink with my lovely dad and sister in Dianas Cafe :)
Later it was off to Brick Lane and the Whitechapel gallery where there was an exhibition on Sophie Calle which was so beautiful. Exploring letters and how people reinterpret these things. Then after a kind of strange curry where there was a weird plastic mannequin watching over us while we ate and Alice and I were squashed against the wall, but anyway it was good especially after a lovely pear cider before the train home. A lovely day - I love have friends all over the world :)

I keep coming across old projects and it makes me so excited, I used to think in such an interesting way, id never think of just making a poster or a book. It would be anything else, I was always excited, so many ideas but lacked the skills to pull them off very well. Now 2 years later I have learnt many of those 'necessary' skills however maybe I have lost that interesting way of thinking so its about time I brought these two things together and can hopefully create interesting and thought provoking design.I may even revisit some of these projects this year as I know now I can do them so much better. I have my excitement back so here I come senior year.

While Niccolo and his friend Cristina were down for the weekend we all went to the Sunday market and I found some lovely things including a book called " The world of Wonders" which was 10,000 things every child should know, its really amazing! I also found a stunning book on historic maps, but I think my favourite find was a photo album where someone in the 1970s went traveling Europe and its been amazing looking through and comparing to my own photos from my summer of traveling Europe.
Good Times

I was so excited when I found out a great friend of mine from Italy would be visiting me in Brighton. I was also a little scared as what if things were different or we had changed, but then once I saw him arriving at the station and threw my eyes around him I realised that as you get older there is no need for that fear as the friends we make our pretty much friends for life. We hadnt spoken properly in about 7 months but all weekend converstation flowed. I forgot my camera so we all bought diposeable ones so Im excited to get those pics back and share them here. But for now it was an amazing weekend hanging with old friends and new friends. Im happy.

Cousins

I have always been very close to my cousins having all grown up together and so when my eldest cousin went away traveling in March I was excited for him but also missed him and realised how far away it was till he would be coming home. Then after a tough week at uni this week I decided I wanted to go home for a bit of a break and I then got the best surprise when my auntie took me upstairs to my cousins room to ask me to help with something and there he was in his room, it felt like a movie I threw my arms around him and was overwhelmed with happiness. Sometimes it takes something like that to give you a little perspective.

London

Alex and Angus
Will

So last week now as part of the transatlantic design project in London, we met up with Alex and Will from its nice that. They really are two of the most genuine guys you are going to meet, they enjoy what they do and its a huge part of their lives but they also have a great perspective in that they also have many other interests and ways to spend their time, it was refreshing and really exciting. They graduated in 2006 and its inspiring to see how far they have come in such a small amount of time and that they are so down to earth. We all sat down and just had a really great and enjoyable conversation it was easy and they gave us some great advice and insights into the London side to our design education project. It was followed by a trip to the pub where I realised after no food and one pint I was a pro at slurring my words, but it was a great night I only hope they could all be like that. A great start to an exciting new thread of our project, I cant wait for more.
Photo Album

Nothing beats having real photos in an album which you can sit and flick through, rather then having to search your hard drive to find the right pic among the thousands you have. I decided to print out all my fav pics from the last year and now after 3 hours and 640 photos I have a lovely set of albums full of wonderful memories :)

Graphic Design

Ok so this is finally the last post about my amazing summer, and I thought I would end it on all the amazing graphics I saw, everywhere I went I saw things that inspired me, the signs were different, graphics were different, I collected so many tickets and took so many pictures of shop signs, i saw so many things that i could never have got from the internet, going to different countries shows you things that normally you wouldn't see - small hand made signs or pictograms or type on the floor. I feel like i have collected so much along the way and my diary is a piece of ephemera itself now that i will always keep as a memento and source of inspiration.
