Ellis Island

Opened on January 1, 1892, Ellis Island became the nation's premier federal immigration station. In operation until 1954, the station processed over 12 million immigrant steamship passengers. The main building was restored after 30 years of abandonment and opened as a museum on September 10, 1990. Today, over 40 percent of America's population can trace their ancestry through Ellis Island. It was such an interesting place to visit, seeing all the old ephemera brought back how real it was and no matter how unemotional you are, when you heard of the people being deported after being refused entry and read facts about how they wouldn't even relax immigration laws during the war to save 20 000 jewish children was very hard hitting. A beautiful museum.

Steven Heller

Monday13th - Steven barely experienced a formal education. He applied to The SVA to escape being enlisted in the Vietnam War and on acceptance, he was soon asked to leave the course due poor attendance. It is debatable that Steven is 'unteachable' or without need for education to flourish however, when we asked him about this he claimed that everyone can be taught. In Graphic Design there are skills that can be taught, but you have to be patient enough to learn.
The subject of money verses design education has frequently been discussed during all of our interviews and by and large our theories about the differences between the UK design education and that of America, being as a result of different tuition fees has been dispelled. However, Steven did highlight that the current economic ball and chain would have an effect on Design and the education of it.

On the same day we got lost we came across some amazing little doorways including a house number 615.5 :)
Adventures

A Park on an old Railway

A wonderful day where getting lost was defiantly the best thing to happen. Chelsea and Greenwich Village really are beautiful places to adventure in and this park was something else especially cos its signage is engraved with glow in the dark ink, well worth a visit.

Coney Island

This place is Stuck in a time warp, it is kinda gross but great all at the same time. The type was sweet, all hand painted and peeling off. The rides look ancient yet there all still in working order, It was a lot of fun!
Rhode Island

Thank you to Chris Rose and his Wife Christine . They put Chloe and I up for a night and gave us a beautiful day in Rhode Island. The RISD School of Art is an impressive school with many influential people at the helm of it. It has a nature lab as well as an amazing museum. It is a school I could only dream of attending. Chris is an extremely intelligent man who has brought new ideas and questions to this project so a huge thank you to him and his kindness towards us.
Marshall Arisman

We had yet another amazing interview with a man that some have called "God". He gave us a great conversation which we are now trying to transcribe... this project is simply getting more and more interesting as it progresses so watch this space.
Live Crab

for the first time i ate crab and conch (a blind snail) It was strange at first especially when i pushed too hard on the crab shell and ended up with crab insides all over me, but all in all it tasted good!

Day one Internship

A tribute to Michael Jackson, set design and Installation. I was a little skeptical about the memorial for MJ however after being their sort of live, I felt more of a connection to it all. He really was a music legend and regardless of all the bad press he was truly unique and seeing his daughter speak and then burst into tears brought it all back to reality, whatever your stance on the subject at the end of the day he is just a man, a dad whose family are grieving just like any other would.
