Diary

Here are a few things I collected on my travels, it was really nice to go back to basics and just write in a diary and to collect things although my tiny diary is now huge hehe, but full of lovely things that i will keep forever (or until they disintegrate).

Postcards

















A postcard from every country I visited except I forgot when I was in paris, but luckily a friend from there is sending me one so that will be coming soon. I love postcards though they are tactile and have beautiful stamps and are a beautiful snapshot of the place you were in.

Ok so the summer is nearly over now and all the things i have to do are now really dawning on me. I have had an amazing summer and so am fine with getting down with some real work however i decided to write a things to do list today and it is literally longer then my arm!!!! Im sure I will find a way to get it done but I forsee a few sleepless nights in the next coming weeks to get on top of it all! I have at least done 3 things on my list - get a new phone contract, got my job back at NEXT so yay income at last and lastly been to the doctor where my collar bone that has been swollen all summer was given the all clear - I was told that the swollen one was actually normal and the other one which I have actually broken before is the abnormal one and the pains I get in it are just a part of life so there you go! I also got a lovely new red jacket so lifes pretty good really - but i better get on with that list! Also I found out that I am going to be in a book this May time - they are using my CV and Covering letter on a whole double page spread - im very excited!

Alive in Joburg - District 9















If you havnt yet seen District 9 then I would recommend you do. It is a really interesting film, some have said sci fi at its best.This link above is to Alive in Joburg which is the prequel to the film by Neil Blomkamp. The film uses real footage from the time and simply applies it to the alien situation which reflects the apartheid situation that was still in effect in South Africa in 1990.
According to individuals "interviewed" in the film, the aliens were captive labor (slaves or indentured servants), forced to live in "conditions that were not good" and had escaped to Earth. Because the film takes place in 1990, while apartheid was still in effect in South Africa, the aliens were forced to live amongst the already-oppressed black population, causing conflict with them as well as the non-white and white population.
It is a really great film which for me provoked great emotion towards these 'prawns'. One of the aliens has a small son and their quest to return everything to order means you cant take your eyes off the screen. I really wasn't sure when it first started but its well worth seeing.

D&AD Xchange

As part of our project the Transatlantic Divide in Design education that we completed in New York, we met Ian Wright a really great guy who couldn't do enough for us, he is an ex brighton lecturer and very talented designer. He was asked to do a lecture about him and his work at the D&AD Xchange and thought that our project was worthy of a 10 minute slot in his! I was so scared i have never had to do something so scary, there were lecturers and people from the industry everywhere, there were people like Storm Thorgerson and then there was us the only students there! But it was a great experience and once we all got in to it the nerves seemed to fade and hopefully we just came across as us - four girls excited about a project we have created. It was great followed by a well deserved drink after, I slept well that nigh thats for sure.

Stop One - Amsterdam

Amsterdam was a really interesting place including the red light district and smoking cafes, its like nowhere I had ever been before. It was very chilled out yet full of people and there was loads to see culturally. It was my first stop on my Europe travels and I had literally got back a few days before from my 7 week stint in the USA so at first I was feeling a little lost but all my friends from home had joined us for the first 4 days so it was a crazy but great first destination. We took little boats down the river as well as took a trip to the zoo where a butterfly sat on my finger it was all very exciting, we also saw Ann Franks house which was really interesting and still shocks me today so see how that period in history even happened. But it was fun especially with all my friends!
